General Skilled Migration

There are three options in this visa category

  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) – point tested stream
  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) – New Zealand stream
  • Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) - point tested stream

  • Achieve the pass mark set for the skilled migration points test – currently set at 65 for these visas
  • lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect
  • upon invitation lodge your application within 60 days
  • be between 18 and 45 years of age
  • pass a skills assessment for an occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • meet English language and health and character requirements

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) - New Zealand stream

  • Hold a New Zealand Special Category subclass 444 visa
  • Have usually resided in Australia for at least 5 years
  • Have started living here on or before 19 February 2016
  • You must have a minimum annual salary of $53900 for 3 years in the last 5 years. One of these 3 years must be the most recent financial year
  • All dependent applicants must hold a substantive visa or bridging visa A, B or C if they are in Australia at the time of application

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

  • achieve the pass mark set for the skilled migration points test – currently set at 65 for these visas
  • pass a skills assessment for an occupation listed on the relevant Skilled Occupations List
  • meet English language and health and character requirements
  • lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect
  • will need to be nominated by a State or Territory
  • upon invitation lodge your application within 60 days
  • be between 18 and 45 years of age

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

It is a 5-year temporary visa for people who are prepared to live and work in regional areas. All the previous criteria apply to this visa. All stages of this visa is similar to 190 visa.

However, it is also possible to be sponsored by a relative who lives in the regional area where you are applying.
